The benefits

Equine assisted therapy has been proven to be effective in reducing children’s irritability, agitation and impulsivity, and increases cooperation, emotional regulation, capacity for delay and behavioural control.

Equine assisted therapy sessions focus on themes such as self-confidence and self-esteem, self-efficacy and a sense of mastery from successfully overcoming challenges, social skills and an empathy for others.

Working with the horses is a ‘bottom up’ not ‘top down’ therapy and it is often found that children who have difficulty discussing emotions and feelings can become more open and articulate during time with the horses as they become more aware of these emotions.

The sessions are ground work only, grooming, leading and learning about horse care, combined with some art activities to help regulate emotions.
